Starting on January 15, Jessica Carter takes up the position as associate professor at the Center for Science Studies.

Carter specializes in the philosophy of mathematical practice and takes an interest in the history of mathematics. Since 2008, she has been employed as associate professor at the Dept. of Mathematics & Computer Science, University of Southern Denmark, where she taught philosophy of science and math courses.

In 2009, Carter was one of the founding members of the Association of the Philosophy of Mathematical Practice (APMP). She is now the current APMP president.

Carter’s research combines traditional topics in the philosophy of mathematics using historical case studies and with a particular emphasis on mathematical practice. Her 2019 article, Philosophy of Mathematical Practice — Motivations, Themes and Prospects, proposes a general framework and an overall structure for the philosophy of mathematical practice.

Carter takes a special interest in visualization and the role of representations in mathematical practice. Her most recent publication, Logic of Relations and Diagrammatic Reasoning: Structuralist Elements in the Work of Charles Sanders Peirce, deals with related issues in relation to the philosophy of American logician and mathematician Charles Sanders Pierce.
