									<p class="MsoNormal">In this presentation, I would like to discuss two questions regarding the nature of what is now commonly called metascience and/or the science of science. The reason I do this, is that this field is supposed to create the empirical and theoretical basis for intellectual and policy interventions in the field of science funding and evaluation. The questions are:</p>
<p>The science of science is always presented as a promising interdisciplinary emerging field. The newest kid on the block. Interestingly, this has been the claim since its first formulation in the early years of the twentieth century. So how novel is it really? And why does this matter?</p><div><p>Is the name of the field not a bit misleading? We know that names and titles are not innocent. The name "science of science" suggests a rock solid foundation on the basis of which we are finally able to understand how science works. The name "metascience" suggests a bird's eye view, a comprehensive view of the whole of science. Is this feasible?</p></div><div><p><em>Coffee/tea, cake and fruit will be served at 13:15.</em></p></div>
