My main philosophical interests concern the development and nature of explanations in the life sciences. This is a broad interest in the creative co-development of hypotheses and new techniques of experimentation, as well as the structure and foundation of established explanations and theories.
The Ph.D. project concerns scientific reasoning in the contemporary life sciences with special focus on systems biology. I investigate the philosophical implications of the transfer of knowledge, concepts and methodologies from other disciplines, such as engineering. In particular I focus on the role of models and heuristic frameworks that both afford and limit scientific reasoning.
