The workshop aims at understanding recent developments in Systems Biology from a philosophical perspective. Its goal is to shed light on the variety of approaches to modelling, simulation and experimentation that can be found in the field.
Systems Biology is a rapidly growing area of research that combines traditional molecular and cellular biology with powerful mathematical and computational methods in order to gain a yet deeper understanding of the complexity of living organisms. Drawing on such diverse fields as molecular biology, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, chemistry, physics and engineering, Systems Biology is a highly interdisciplinary field of research – and a great opportunity to (re-)discuss issues in philosophy of biology and philosophy of science, such as causality, functional explanations and reductionism.
The workshop is funded by the European Science Foundation, within the Research Networking Programme The Philosophy of Science in a European Perspective (PSE). The workshop is led by Hanne Andersen (PSE team co?leader) and Marcel Weber (PSE team leader). Hanne Andersen serves as chair of the local organizer group. Both the research group Philosophy of Contemporary Science in Practice (PCSP), Aarhus University, and the research group Philosophical Foundations for Systems Biology (PSBio), Oslo University, are involved in the organization of the workshop.
