Abstract
Recent critiques have exposed serious flaws in individualistic models of privacy governance. However, efforts to link these critiques to positive proposals for political and economic reform remain limited. While notice-and-consent regimes are widely acknowledged to fall short, many responses involve only ad hoc amendments, failing to connect accounts of privacy justice with broader theories of justice. As a result, they are either insufficiently radical or lack meaningful guidance for action. Meanwhile, emerging proposals for restructuring the digital economy, aimed at limiting exploitation and addressing socio-economic inequalities, offer resources for rethinking privacy governance itself. I argue that these proposals illuminate what privacy justice requires, providing a path beyond the dilemmas created by overly individualistic frameworks through mechanisms for long-term, collective control over data.
Bio
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus university, having completed my doctorate with Mancept, the political theory research group at the University of Manchester. My work to date focuses on privacy, and spans conceptual analysis, rights theory, structural and technological considerations, and finally assesses various possible socio-economic systems and technologies in light of my findings and possible conflicting values. More recently I have been working on questions relating to the ethics and epistemology of explainable AI (XAI).
Coffee/tea, cake and fruit will be served @ 2pm.
