New book review by Cristina Lagido

The public: an insider to scientific research. Metascience, E-pub ahead of print (13 November 2024)

In Science and the Public, Angela Potochnik provides a useful mapping of the many questions at the interface between science and the public. Potochnik argues that science is obligated to the public due to the significant societal investments in science, the societal benefits that science can produce, and the injustices and social problems to which the institution of science has contributed. A main concern in the book is therefore to establish how the institution of science can fulfil its obligations to society. Potochnik proposes that broadened participation in science is a mechanism to achieve this goal, ensuring that science becomes more responsive to societal needs. By “broad participation” she means the inclusion of not only more, but also more diverse, professionals and members of the public.
